Discover Christchurch

Known as the Garden City, Christchurch (Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the gateway to other destinations. Combing heritage, culture and a vibrant hospitality industry, Christchurch is a place of wonder, urban regeneration, state-of-the-art architecture, and acres of sprawling parks and gardens.

Things to Do in Christchurch

Watch productions at the Isaac Theatre Royal – a heritage building in the Christchurch CBD. In Winter the nearby ski fields bring skiers from all around the world. Wander the New Brighton pier at night and listen to the sounds of the waves break against the pier as colourful lights liven up the scene.

Take a self-drive tour around the stunning bays and harbours to the historic French settlement of Akaroa. Enjoy the taste of locally caught fish, or take a harbour cruise and see dolphins and other wildlife.

Whether you are travelling here for a romantic getaway, a corporate retreat, or a luxury family holiday, Christchurch has something to inspire, delight and excite all ages, tastes and budgets.

Family Friendly Activities

Family-friendly activities and attractions abound in and around the city. Wander around Orana Wildlife Park and see lions, tigers, rhinos and giraffes. Or meander along the trails at Willowbank and hand feed eels, chickens and pigs.

New Brighton beach and Sumner beach are popular hangouts for families, groups and couples alike in Summer. Fly a kite, go surfing or body boarding, lie in the sun, build a sandcastle or enjoy a picnic.

Children and adults alike can leap and jump at the trampoline parks (Mega Air and Flip Out), or take the kids (and big kids) to one of the Inflatable World’s to enjoy a day of jumping on and off, giant bouncy castles.

Play at the recently constructed Margaret Mahy Playground, feed alpacas at the Silverstream Alpaca Farmstay, pick daffodils at Hadstock Farm, visit the Canterbury Museum, browse one of the many shopping malls, or ride the Halswell Miniature Trains.
