Visit the Museum

See the culture and history of New Zealand at the Canterbury Museum. Browse the interactive exhibits, journey through time to see extinct animals, cultures of civilisations past, and objects from the heroic age of exploration and discovery. Relax for a coffee in the Museum Cafe with views of the Botanic Gardens.

Ride the Christchurch Gondola

Ride a cable car up a gentle incline some 500 metres up the Port Hills and experience amazing 360° views of Christchurch City, the harbour and the Southern Alps in the distance. At the top, take a journey through time some 12 million years ago in the Time Tunnel. The automated ride takes you through the smouldering depths of a volcano, a native New Zealand forest, a short voyage onboard a ship and through the early settlements of Christchurch. Ideal for families, groups and couples alike.

Wander the Botanic Gardens

Stroll through the beautiful Christchurch Botanic Gardens and explore the Rose Garden with 150 different varieties of rose, be wowed by sub-Antarctic daisies, tough enough to survive wind and sleet, wander through conservatories with tropical plants entwining each other, and appreciate the different smells of the the Fragrance Garden. Take a picnic and relax on the sprawling lawns, or watch the kids play in the playground.

Explore Christchurch CBD

Take a wander through the changing face of Christchurch Central. The post quake container mall has closed, with the first of the commercial buildings taking its place. New buildings with modern design and flair are replacing old broken buildings, with something to wow and wonder at every turn. Wander along the steps of the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial that remembers the 185 people who lost their lives on the 22 February 2011 earthquake.
